The textbook is a great introduction to MATLAB and MATHCAD. It sufficiently covers the elementary components of MATLAB required to write up or understand basic code for university level engineering courses. However, as the focus of the textbook is an introduction to these tools, it may not be sufficient to serve as a standalone material for a class. It would be a great supplementary book for courses that require basic knowledge of MATLAB based coding. Furthermore, the index and glossary are effective in efficiently aiding the readers to find contents of interest.
The contents of the textbook such as the codes and explanations are accurate and error-free. Therefore, the examples are easy to follow and understand.
The contents are up-to-date and valid for the the latest version of MATLAB. As the contents covered in this book are at an introductory level, the textbook will be valid for a long period of time. Unless there are major revisions or changes to the MATLAB software or environment, significant updates or corrections will not be required for this resource.
The text was very simple, clear, and comprehensible.
The coding style introduced in this book is consistent, and easy to follow.
It is possible to jump into chapters of interest rather than having to go through the book chronologically.
The structure of the book is very straight forward. It starts from the very basics of MATLAB, then flows into more advanced contents, and leads into applications of Mathcad.
The book was easy to navigate, and all the images, codes, and figures were clear.
There were no apparent grammatical errors present in the textbook.
The text was not culturally insensitive or offensive in any way.

This textbook, or really a “coursebook” for a college freshman-level class, has been updated for Spring 2014 and provides an introduction to programming and problem solving using both Matlab and Mathcad. We provide a balanced selection of introductory exercises and real-world problems (i.e. no “contrived” problems). We include many examples and screenshots to guide the reader. We assume no prior knowledge of Matlab or Mathcad.
