The Open Education Network’s (OEN) Publishing Cooperative Advisory Group is a new standing group with a visionary, strategic and action-oriented purpose. Launching in January 2023, the group will be responsible for maintaining and facilitating a community-driven Publishing Cooperative that reflects the OEN’s Guiding Principles.
Publishing Cooperative
The Publishing Cooperative (Co-op) comprises OEN members who are interested in open textbook publishing. Co-op members vary in their publishing experience from those who have not yet published, to others who are managing established, robust programs. Most have completed Pub101, the OEN’s informal orientation to open textbook publishing.
Vision
The Publishing Cooperative Advisory Group is responsible for developing an open textbook publishing vision for the Open Education Network community. The group will also identify the community’s publishing needs and pathways to address those needs.
Advisory Group Members:
- Stefanie Buck, Oregon State University
- Angelique Carson, Washington Research Library Consortium
- Daniela Dutra Elliott, Leeward Community College (University of Hawaii)
- Mark Lane, Oregon State University
- Christina Riehman-Murphy, The Pennsylvania State University
- Kelly Smith, Eastern Kentucky University
- Christina Trunnell, Montana State University
- Jason Yamashita, Leeward Community College (University of Hawaii)
Karen Lauritsen, OEN’s Publishing Director, and Jamie Witman, OEN’s Open Educational Practices Specialist, will facilitate the group’s progress.
“We’re excited to work with this dedicated group of people who want to support the publishing community,” Lauritsen said. “This Advisory Group is a new way to leverage our shared abundance.”
Leveraging Collective Knowledge
Advisory Group members said they’re excited by the potential impact of the Publishing Co-op.
“As a way to gather, examine, nurture, and share ideas, this initiative is an exciting vehicle to consider the possibilities of leveraging collective knowledge towards greater sustainable outcomes,” Jason Yamashita said. “While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to all our institutions, organizations, and systems, I believe there are best practices that can be identified and made more accessible to benefit our various communities.”
Christina Trunnell sees the Advisory Group as a space to prioritize student-centered publishing needs. “To maintain an equity-centered approach, I think we always need a space to ask questions like, ‘What are we missing?’ ‘What isn’t working?’ ‘Whose voices aren’t we hearing from?’” she observed. “For publishing, this would be that space.”
