Research Methods for the Social Sciences: An Introduction

For an introduction book to research methods, it provides an excellent level of information. It’s a good resource for those working with students who might not have a strong background in research. Some might consider adding to the basics concepts shared, however, additional discussion of effect sizes, variance accounted for, and various analyses such as t-tests, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANOVA), and Regression. Though univariate and bivariate analyses are discussed, knowledge of these additional terms and analyses would help students greatly as they consider the strength of the publications and studies they review for their future literature reviews.

Beyond the few improvements and suggestions, included in this review, with precision the author did a great job with this textbook.

Overall, the book is quite relevant. One improvement that could be made, however, is instead of talking about how frequently students “undertake a Google Search” (p. 3), it would be beneficial to expand this example to include the use of “search engines and AI tools”. Furthermore, depending on which side of the lens one might view change, the world of research has encountered a major conundrum when it comes to the prevalence of Artificial Intelligence (AI). And there is not one mention of artificial intelligence in the text.

Although the benefits and challenges of using AI to augment research might truly deserve a whole chapter, at the least it should be a consideration to add discussion of AI to one or more of the chapters in the book. Additionally, there could be a prompt or activity created by just asking AI, “What are the strengths and challenges of AI to help a student perform a literature review and develop a research question?”

AI tools like Google’s Gemini, can also be used to turn the summary provided into a podcast for the student to listen to. AI can be used as a productive way to initially explore research questions, summaries of basic findings, and so much more. But students must be educated that one of the biggest issues AI faces is not doing math well. Because AI only uses the information or data it captures. Additionally, often with little control it grabs everything it can. As a result the information or data utilized might be dirty or flawed data, or missing crucial data that might reverse the AI findings shared. But if one asks the question above, AI is normally honest and provides the good and the bad of such AI use in the realm of research methods.

For an introduction to research methods, the text is written clearly. It is easy to read and follow. One improvement, however, could include initially sharing and more clearly explaining how a term like “random assignation” in the USA is also called “random assignment”. It’s odd how Section 6.1 is titled or called random assignation but through the body of the section as well as Sections 4.6, 6.2, 6.4 and 7.3 it is called random assignment.

Furthermore, using acronyms as mnemonics to help students remember things more deeply could be of benefit. For example, Nominal, Ordinal, Interval and Ratio have historically been taught and shared using NOIR.

Consistency rating: 5

The chapters follow a consistent format that makes reading more beneficial to the reader. The use of examples and breakout boxes provide a regular path to addressing essential terminology and insights provided.

Modularity rating: 5

It is indeed a text that can be reorganized and divided easily enough. For online use purposes, however, this book could be improved by following a simple rule of not having paragraphs be more than three to five sentences rather than the traditional five to seven sentences long.

Organization/Structure/Flow rating: 4

For the most part, the chapters follow a well-designed logical flow for students to learn research methods. But what I also appreciate is the design capabilities of this open-source text to rearrange the chapters if a professor wishes to possibly:
1. take a slightly different approach to covering the chapters based upon a project-based learning (PBL) approach to instruction,
2. teach students more of the essential caveats to research methods and methodological requirements that students need to know before asking the student to produce a research question or do a basic literature review or literature review outline (e.g., Annotated Bibliography),
3. having students do a review of the peer-reviewed literature on a basic topic or concept of interest to the student before writing a research question.

The opensource capabilities allow one to organize the chapters as needed. For example, before a student does a literature review related to quantitative research with expectations of selecting reliable and valid publications, some professors might want students to better understand sampling techniques and assessment requirements, as well as have a basic concept of what the analysis and results section share in a publication. When it comes to writing an excellent research question, a review of the literature should also help a student decide between normative and empirical statements as well as research direction being exploratory, descriptive or explanatory. As some have experienced, for students to avoid disappointment and work smart and not just work hard, doing this initial research on the peer-reviewed literature related to the basic concepts the student is interested in researching, allows one to better determine what their final research questions will be to best perform literature reviews and design the methods to assess.

This is why I would probably add to chapter 3’s list of what composes a good research question (p. 61),
“6. It has not been overly researched, and a plethora of publications has sufficiently established the findings.

7. A body of evidence exists that suggests the question is essential to augmenting and evolving research on the topic.”

As a result, the number 6 above could also be addressed in Table 3.2 Problematic and Improved research questions.

The interface is excellently designed.

Grammatical Errors rating: 5

Overall, the book is excellently written. But when it comes to research methods and future analysis efforts, it is important consider if the correct word has been selected which is concise, clear, and holds little risk of being misconceived. For example, in Chapter 1 at the bottom of page 1 it reads, “In this textbook, you will learn why research is 'done' and, more importantly, about the methods researchers use to conduct research.” I emphasize the word “done”, because I believe one could use a better word such as performed, pursued, or completed. In a time when research grants have been frozen and taken away in the USA, to read “why research is done…” can sadly be mistaken to suggest research is finished.

This book covers a variety of research methods used in social sciences. It's not as comprehensive as the textbook I am currently using for my research class, as that one is more discipline oriented. Another main concern of using this book is that the content seems too introductory, which may be a better choice for the intro to research class. However, mine is an advanced level research method class, so I hope the content can be deeper.

This book is clear to read. I would prefer the organization of the chapter can be adjusted. For example, I would like to see data collection can be grouped into each research method (e.g., survey, focus group), instead of as a standalone chapter.

Each section is relatively a good length for students to read. I wish there are some discussion questions can be added to each chapter to facilitate critical thinking and encourage students to reflect on the readings.

I think this book can be best used as an introduction to research class textbook aimed at students who have no background knowledge about research in social science.

This book does an excellent job of walking students through the full research process, starting with how to frame a question and moving all the way through data collection, analysis, and sharing results. I really appreciate how it balances qualitative and quantitative methods, since many introductory texts lean heavily on one or the other. The addition of topics like ethics, unobtrusive research, and fieldwork shows that it’s not just focusing on the basics but giving students a true sense of the range of methods available to them. It feels thorough without being overwhelming, which makes it especially approachable for students who may be nervous about research methods.

This text feels very relevant to students today, but it’s also written in a way that ensures it will stay useful for years to come. Research methods evolve slowly, and the author presents ideas in a timeless way that makes the book easy to keep using semester after semester. The structure also makes it flexible for instructors to update or supplement with current examples as needed, without losing the core value of the text. Because of that, I see this book as a resource that won’t just support students in one class but could be something they return to later when working on projects, theses, or even professional research.S

The tone strikes a nice balance between being academically rigorous and accessible, which is exactly what’s needed in an introductory text.

I especially appreciate the balance between qualitative and quantitative methods, the clear discussion of ethics, and the flexibility of the text’s modular design. It’s a solid resource for both students and instructors, and I would be confident recommending it in a variety of teaching settings.
