A Step-by-Step Method for student composers to write in a variety of styles, genres, and forms. Driven by simple model examples and accompanied by audio samples, it is intended to develop individual creativity and confidence in writing and, in so doing, explore the student’s inherent expressive talents. Each chapter provides reference examples from the literature for the student to discover works by master composers.
About the Contributors
Author
Dr. Justin Rubin is Distinguished Professor of Music and Chair of the Composition and Theory Program at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers that represents the highest recognition by the University of its most distinguished scholar-teachers. He was additionally honored with a Tezla Teacher/Scholar Award and a Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Research and is a Fulbright Scholar. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Purchase College in New York, and the University of Arizona, Rubin has released numerous recordings of his music as well as organ and contemporary piano works and received international composition awards over the past three decades. His teachers include Daniel Asia, Dary John Mizelle, Richard Cameron-Wolfe, Pamela Decker, and Phillip Kawin.
