About the Book
This guide to legal research and citation of New Zealand law provides direction to students undertaking legal research. It may also be useful for members of the public and self-represented litigants. It covers the core skills and knowledge for effective legal research, such as creating a search strategy, identifying where to locate legal information and legal citation using the New Zealand Law Style Guide. This text explores searching for sources of legal information including case law, legislation and commentary and explains the different approaches required to locate and cite these sources of law.

Authors
Theresa Buller (ALIANZA, RLIANZA, BA, MLIS) is a Subject Librarian for Law and Criminal Justice at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury. Theresa is passionate about delivering excellent library practice in her daily work that supports and encourages lifelong library use, digital literacy skills and student success.
Catherine Doughty (AFHEA, ALIANZA, RLIANZA, BCA, MLIS, PG Dip Ed) is the Law Subject Librarian at Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of Wellington. Catherine has worked in libraries for over 40 years and is an ardent supporter for working collaboratively with teaching staff to build information literacy skill development into course curricula. She is passionate that students and researchers become critically thinking information users.
Melanie Lovich (BA, DipLibr, CertHE, LLM) is the former Liaison Librarian for Law and Taxation at Te Mātāpuna | Auckland University of Technology. Melanie has over 30 years’ experience in public and academic libraries, primarily as a subject specialist in various areas of business, law and taxation. A strong advocate of lifelong learning and information literacy skills, she has worked collaboratively with teaching staff supporting student success.
Tracey Thomas (BMS, DipLibr, LLB) is a Research Services Adviser in Ngā Ratonga Manaaki Rangahau o Te Tumu Herenga | Research Services, Libraries and Learning Services, Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland. Tracey provides services to support and enhance the research activities of postgraduates and staff. She provides advice on research outputs, researcher profiles and identifiers, and advanced legal research
Kate Thompson (BA, MLIS, PGCertTertT) became the Law Librarian at Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka | University of Otago in 2008 and has worked in subject specialist roles at the University Library for over 25 years. Kate is the CAUL Library Representative for the Open Textbook Service at Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka | University of Otago.
