    About the Book

    Kreyòl pale (Creole is Spoken) is a 29-chapter textbook designed for beginner learners of the Haitian Creole language. The textbook employs a communicative pedagogical methodology emphasizing the learner’s acquisition of speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills through meaningful content. The textbook focuses on communication scenarios that are the most important for navigating daily life in Haiti and its Diaspora. Kreyòl pale is built on contemporary teaching methodologies that place Haitian Creole communicativeness at the center of the learner’s experience. Kreyòl pale is an essential beginners’ Haitian Creole textbook due to the meaningfulness, practicality, and relatability of its Haitian Creole materials. As an introduction to Haitian Creole language and culture, this textbook opens the way to the many paths to mastery. (en)

    About the Contributors

    Authors

    Born in Port-au-Prince, not only does Dr. Tezil serve and support humanitarian efforts in Haiti, but he also conducts research on language, literacy, bilingualism, and sustainable development as he continues to advocate for policy changes.

    Ben Hebblethwaite is an associate professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. His research focuses on the languages and cultures of Haiti, Jamaica, France, Germany and the Netherlands. He also is interested in the intersection of language, history, songs and religion. Ben has two recent books, including the sole-authored, "A Transatlantic History of Haitian Vodou" and the co-edited volume with Mariana Past, "Stirring up the Pot of Haitian History," which is a translation of Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s 1976 Haitian Creole book, "Ti difé boulé sou istoua Ayiti." He is collaborating on a U.S. Department of Education-funded introductory Haitian Creole textbook. He is a current member of University of Press of Florida faculty board.
