About the Book
Pasaporte laboral is a textbook designed for intermediate and advanced students of Spanish and heritage speakers who aim to advance their communicative competence in Spanish for professional purposes, both in the United States and abroad. The textbook is organized into five chapters that focus on professional fields: business, health, social services, information technology, and human resources. Considering that authentic input is essential for the development of proficiency, each chapter presents original texts, tracks, and audio-visual components (such as YouTube video links) with before-and-after listening activities. Each chapter focuses on a Latin American country and incorporates cultural and informative articles related to the professional field approached. Some of these texts discuss gender issues and the place of women in professional settings. The articles include reading assignments that support the development of students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking. A lexical section is part of every chapter and includes cognates, common words, and technical terms. In addition, the section contains exercises that allow students to progress from understanding words in context to more open-ended communicative activities. Moreover, each chapter includes three grammar topics with inductive activities that engage students in making inferences about rules and patterns of Spanish sentence structures and tenses. The grammar sections contain application exercises focused on real-life communicative situations, such as dialogues, interviews, and other professional interactions. All chapters offer ideas for writing tasks, ranging from creative prompts to real-world activities, translation exercises, and a list of suggestions for class projects and presentations to be completed individually or in groups.
